Sacramento Guide: 3-Day Sacramento Weekend Itinerary: What to Do in 72 Hours

A perfect 3-day Sacramento itinerary — where to stay, what to see, where to eat. From Old Sacramento to the Capitol to a Kings game or A's game at Sutter Health Park.

Three days in Sacramento is the sweet spot — enough time to hit the must-see attractions, eat at a few destination restaurants, and see live baseball or a concert. Here's the itinerary we recommend to City of Trees House guests who ask "what should we do with a long weekend?"

Where to Stay

Downtown hotels (Hyatt, Kimpton, Hard Rock) run $250-450/night. For 3 days with a group of 3+, a vacation rental like ours typically comes in at half the per-person cost with three bedrooms, a kitchen, a private backyard, and free parking. 7 minutes' walk to Sutter Health Park and 5 minutes' drive to Golden 1 Center.

Day 1 — Arrive and Orient

  • Afternoon check-in at your rental. Decompress in the backyard or hot tub.
  • 4 PM: Drive 10 minutes to Old Sacramento Waterfront. Walk the boardwalk. Take sunset photos at Tower Bridge. Old Sac guide.
  • 6 PM: Dinner at Rio City Cafe (riverside patio) or drive to midtown for Canon or Mother.
  • 9 PM: Drink at Revival at the Sawyer (rooftop bar with DoCo views) or back at the house for game room time.

Day 2 — The Big Attractions

  • 9 AM: Breakfast at Bacon & Butter or Tower Cafe. Coffee from Temple Coffee Roasters.
  • 10 AM: California State Railroad Museum (1.5 hrs) — world-class.
  • 12 PM: Lunch in Old Sac or walk 10 minutes to the California State Capitol.
  • 1 PM: Free Capitol tour + walk through Capitol Park.
  • 3 PM: Drive to Crocker Art Museum (world-class art, family-friendly).
  • 5 PM: Drive back to the house. Rest, hot tub.
  • 6:30 PM: If there's a River Cats or A's home game, walk 7 minutes to Sutter Health Park. If not, drive 5 minutes to Golden 1 Center for a Kings game or concert, or head to midtown for dinner + live music.

Day 3 — Active / Outdoor

  • 9 AM: Breakfast then rent bikes from Practical Cycle.
  • 10 AM: Ride the American River Bike Trail — 32 paved miles. Stop at Discovery Park where the rivers meet.
  • 1 PM: Lunch at The Bread Store or a picnic in William Land Park.
  • 2 PM: Kids? Sacramento Zoo + Fairytale Town. Adults-only? Barrel House tasting room or Farm-to-Fork tour.
  • 5 PM: Rest up. Final dinner at your top-choice restaurant you haven't hit yet.
  • Evening: Hot tub, game room, fire pit. Plan your return trip.

What to Skip

Honest advice: you don't need every museum in 3 days. The Railroad Museum is essential; the smaller Wells Fargo and Schoolhouse museums are pass-able unless you have kids deeply into Gold Rush history. Cal Expo is only worth it during the State Fair (July). And the "Farm-to-Fork" marketing is real but most of the farm-to-fork dining happens at specific restaurants (Mulvaney's, The Kitchen, Ella) — you don't need to plan a special "tour."

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sacramento?

Best overall: April-May and September-October. Mild weather (60-80°F), baseball season, fewer crowds.

Summer (June-August): Can hit 100°F. Book a place with AC and a pool or hot tub. River Cats games in the evening.

Fall (September-October): Farm-to-Fork Festival, Kings preseason, beautiful weather.

Winter (December-February): Quieter, occasional cold snaps. Great for indoor museums and cozy restaurants.
