Sacramento Events: Where to Stay for a Sacramento Athletics Game at Sutter Health Park

A local's guide to hotels near Sutter Health Park and better alternatives. Parking tips, walking distance, and why a vacation rental often beats a hotel for A's and River Cats games.

If you're heading to a Sacramento Athletics game (yes, the Oakland A's play here now) or a Sacramento River Cats game at Sutter Health Park, the question isn't if you'll come — it's where you'll sleep. Downtown hotels fill up, prices spike on game nights, and the surprisingly limited parking near the ballpark makes the drive-in option harder than it looks.

We host guests at City of Trees House — a 3-bedroom vacation rental a 7-minute walk from Sutter Health Park. This is the guide we wish someone had handed us before our first game day: where to stay, how to handle parking, and what to do before and after the first pitch.

Quick Facts About Sutter Health Park

  • Address: 400 Ballpark Drive, West Sacramento, CA 95691
  • Previously known as: Raley Field (renamed 2020)
  • Capacity: ~10,624 standard, expanded to ~14,000 for A's games with temporary bleachers
  • Home teams: Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A, SF Giants affiliate) since 2000; Sacramento Athletics (MLB) since 2025
  • Season: April through September, with additional summer concerts and special events

Hotels Near Sutter Health Park

Traditional hotel options within 1-2 miles of the ballpark:

  • Sawyer Hotel — Luxury downtown, 1.2 miles across the Tower Bridge. $350-500/night on game days.
  • Holiday Inn Express West Sacramento — 1.5 miles. Budget option, $150-220/night.
  • Best Western Sandman — 2 miles. Mid-range, $130-200/night.
  • Fort Sutter Hotel — Midtown, 2.5 miles. Boutique, $250-400/night.
  • Kimpton Sawyer / Hyatt Regency — Downtown, walkable distance across the bridge for fit walkers.

The catch: most of these charge for a single room that sleeps two adults. If you're traveling as a family of four or a group of friends, you're booking two rooms and losing the shared kitchen, living space, and private outdoor area.

Why a Vacation Rental Often Wins for Game Day

For groups of 3 or more, a vacation rental with kitchen and multiple bedrooms usually comes in under a comparable hotel when you do the math per person. Add in:

  • A full kitchen for pre-game meals (downtown restaurants mark up 20-40% on game nights)
  • Free laundry for multi-day trips
  • Multiple bedrooms so nobody's sharing
  • Free parking — saves $20-30/day
  • A private outdoor space for kids and pets

City of Trees House specifically is the closest vacation rental we know of to Sutter Health Park — 7-minute walk, 3 bedrooms sleeping up to 10, private hot tub, neon-lit game room with arcade cabinets, and a fenced backyard with fire pit and grill for pre-game tailgating at home. See full details on the property page.

Sutter Health Park Parking: The Honest Truth

Parking is the single biggest logistical headache for game attendees. Here's what to know:

  • Official ballpark lots: $20-30 per game, sell out 30+ minutes before first pitch on weekends and A's games.
  • SpotHero / ParkWhiz: Pre-book garages for $15-25. Highly recommended if you must drive.
  • Reserved via sacpark.org: City-operated reserved parking garages exist but also fill fast.
  • Street parking: Free but strictly metered/permit-enforced in surrounding neighborhoods. Tickets are $80+.

Our guests skip the parking game entirely. Leave the car at our driveway, walk 7 minutes, enjoy the game, stroll home while everyone else waits in 30-60 minute exit traffic over the Tower Bridge.

Where Do the Oakland A's Play Now?

For the 2025, 2026, and 2027 seasons, the Oakland Athletics play MLB home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento while their new Las Vegas ballpark is built. The team is branded "Sacramento Athletics" during this time (but most fans still call them the A's). They share the ballpark with the Sacramento River Cats — typically the Cats use the park when the A's are on the road.

This is a rare window in sports history: a permanent MLB team playing in a Triple-A stadium. It makes for an incredibly intimate fan experience — every seat is close to the field, and star players are more accessible than at traditional major league venues.

Before the Game: 3 Hours of Perfect

  • 3:00 PM: Pick up provisions at Nugget Markets (2 miles) or Raley's.
  • 4:00 PM: Fire up the grill for a pre-game BBQ in the backyard. Cheaper and better than concessions.
  • 5:30 PM: Walk to the ballpark (7 minutes). No parking. No Uber wait.
  • 6:00 PM: Gates open. Grab a Raley Field Lager from the local taps.
  • 7:05 PM: First pitch.

After the Game

  • Walk home in 7 minutes while the traffic exits the lots (this alone is worth booking close).
  • Hot tub under the stars (the house has a private spa, covered pergola).
  • Game room — pool table, ping pong, arcade cabinets, vinyl records.
  • Firework nights (select Friday home games) are visible from the backyard.
